The Toyota Tamaraw, also called the Champ and Rangga in other countries, is certainly proving to be quite the versatile vehicle platform. We’ve talked about the unique body conversions the Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) offers for the Tamaraw. Now we’re getting a glimpse of what other countries have come up with.
Toyota Indonesia is offering the vehicle with a five-door, seven-seater body option. Called the Rangga SUV, the vehicle boasts of boldly angular design and appears somewhat like an armored vehicle. While the Tamaraw / Rangga was not designed to have an SUV / Wagon form, the adaptation is still quite interesting as the window graphics take a on a cascading look. The look is painted white and has roof rails on top for added utility. The rear door appears to be a liftgate.
Indonesia sources the Rangga in cab and chassis form from Thailand, while the body will be done by an Indonesian coachbuilder. The finished product will then be sent to dealerships as a complete vehicle.
This body option has not been completely dismissed as a possibility by Toyota Motor Philippines as the original Tamaraw was also offered in cab and chassis as well as five-door wagon forms. The company did not precisely state if it will be offered but did not dismiss the idea that it may be offered in the future.
The Rangga SUV is offered with a choice of gas or diesel engines. Pricing for the vehicle starts at around Rp 400,000,000 or roughly P1.47 million when converted to Philippine Pesos. Bear in mind, this is just a starting price and may amount to more if a diesel automatic variant is optioned.
This may end up making it more expensive than Toyota’s current five-door, seven-seater options like the Veloz, Rush, or Innova. In which case, it might not even be worth the effort. Nonetheless, it’s quite an interesting option for the Tamaraw.
