The Philippine National Police (PNP) has no plan to suspend the offensive against communist rebels during the 55th anniversary celebration of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) on Dec. 26.
Instead, PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo said all police commanders, especially in areas where the CPP-New People’s Army (NPA) still operate, were advised to be on alert at all times for possible hostilities by the armed group.
“We will not declare suspension of police operations (SOPO) because history tells us that once SOPO and SOMO (suspension of military operations) are declared, it is being used to conduct ambuscades, harassments and retaliatory attacks,” said Fajardo.
“But we are anticipating retaliatory attacks. So the PNP and the AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines) will work together to secure far-flung areas where police stations are situated,” she added.
Police forces across the country were already placed under heightened alert status for the traditional “simbang gabi”, or night/dawn mass, from Dec. 16 to 24.
PNP chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil said he already directed all police units to implement comprehensive security measures in coordination with local government units, church officials, and other concerned stakeholders.
“Our priority is to provide a safe and peaceful environment for all devotees participating in this sacred tradition. We have increased police presence in churches and surrounding areas to ensure public safety throughout the Simbang Gabi period,” said Marbil.
He said police Assistance Desks (PADs) will be deployed near churches to assist the public, while foot and mobile patrols will be intensified in strategic areas, including public transport terminals, parking areas, and marketplaces.
Fajardo said Marbil also ordered police commanders to step up the monitoring of crime-prone areas to prevent potential threats.
She said police units nationwide are working closely with local government units, barangay officials, and other law enforcement agencies to respond to any emergencies or untoward incidents.
