Volvo Philippines has unveiled the Volvo EX30, its most sustainable vehicle to date, during an exclusive launch at its Makati showroom last month. With the lowest carbon footprint in Volvo’s history, this fully electric subcompact SUV marks a significant step in the company’s journey toward achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.
The launch, held in partnership with Hariphil Asia Resources, Inc. (HARI), signifies a new era for Volvo in the Philippines and underscores its commitment to sustainable luxury. “Our mission is to make Volvo’s innovative and environmentally conscious vehicles accessible, starting with the remarkable EX30,” says Maria Fe Perez-Agudo, HARI vice chair, president, and CEO.
Global market
Studies suggest that sustainability is becoming a significant factor for global consumers, especially in the luxury automotive market. According to a PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) survey, 80 percent of “consumers say they are willing to pay more for sustainable produced or sourced goods.” Furthermore, the study reveals that consumers are willing to pay a 9.7 percent price premium for products with clear sustainability commitments.
For the luxury car segment specifically, environmentally conscious buyers are increasingly driving demand for electric and hybrid vehicles. Brands that integrate sustainable materials and reduce carbon footprints are seen as more appealing to affluent customers who value both prestige and responsibility. This trend is evident in the growing popularity of luxury EVs, such as the EX30, which combine opulence with eco-friendly innovations.
Sustainable design and green technology
The EX30 is designed with sustainability in mind, from its materials to its production processes. Crafted with 25 percent recycled aluminum, 17 percent recycled steel, and 17 percent recycled plastics, it significantly reduces environmental impact.
Its production facilities are powered by renewable energy, showcasing Volvo’s dedication to sustainable manufacturing. Despite its compact size, the EX30 delivers up to 272 horsepower and a range of up to 476 kilometers per charge, proving that performance and sustainability can go hand in hand.
Inside, the EX30 continues Volvo’s commitment to eco-friendly innovation. Its cabin features refined recycled materials, including textiles made from discarded plastics, blending minimalist Scandinavian design with sustainable functionality. Smart technologies such as Google connectivity and a Harman Kardon sound system not only enhance the driving experience but also prioritize energy efficiency.
Sustainability extends beyond environmental considerations to encompass safety. Volvo’s heritage of safety innovation is evident in the EX30, which is equipped with advanced technologies such as Driver Attention Monitoring, designed to detect fatigue or distraction and prevent accidents. Its Collision Avoidance System actively warns, brakes, or steers to avoid potential hazards, ensuring safety while maintaining energy-efficient operations.
Commitment for the future
“It’s so exciting and I’m truly honored to be part of a global premium brand that really exhibits itself to its commitment to make sustainability at its peak. Volvo’s vision may be ambitious but that’s a great thing to be proud of,” shares Perez-Agudo.
The launch of the EX30 is part of Volvo’s global sustainability roadmap. By 2030, Volvo plans to electrify its entire lineup, with 90 to 100 percent of its global sales coming from fully electric vehicles. The company aims to reduce CO2 emissions per vehicle by up to 75 percent and achieve climate-neutral manufacturing by 2025. These efforts form part of Volvo’s broader goal to reach net-zero emissions by 2040, encompassing its supply chain, production processes, and the full lifecycle of its vehicles.
“Today has become an epitome of sustainability in sense that it feels very personal,” says Perez-Agudo, emphasizing Volvo’s thrust into driving change for a sustainable future. “Today, we have launched the Volvo personal service, where the contact point will be at the doorstep. You’ll feel the safest technology, where Volvo is the leader. In terms of customer success, trust, passion, commitment—these are values that Volvo espouses in order to drive the future.”
The EX30 is more than a car—it is a bold statement of what the future of mobility can be. Seamlessly combining cutting-edge technology, luxury, and environmental responsibility, the new Volvo model showcases what the future of driving can look like—safe, smart, and sustainable.
