Taiwan reaffirms solidarity with Philippines through rice donation


Representative Wallace Chow of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in the Philippines (TECO) underscored Taiwan’s unwavering support for the Filipino people during the turnover ceremony of 500 metric tons of rice donated by Taiwan to aid communities affected by recent natural disasters in the Davao region.

Speaking at the event on Dec. 12 in Davao, Representative Chow highlighted the enduring partnership between Taiwan and the Philippines, emphasizing the importance of solidarity in addressing shared challenges.

“The Philippines has faced a series of devastating natural disasters this year, including severe flooding and landslides in January and torrential rains caused by the southwest monsoon in July in the Davao region. These calamities displaced thousands of families and caused immeasurable hardships,” Representative Chow stated. “This rice donation is a tangible expression of love from Taiwan.”

Representative Chow cited the efforts of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), acknowledging its prompt and tireless response in distributing aid to the affected families. 

To date, 1,500 metric tons of rice donated by Taiwan have been delivered and distributed to the most vulnerable families and those severely affected by typhoon “Kristine.”

He reiterated Taiwan’s commitment to standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the Philippines in overcoming challenges. 

Representative Chow thanked Chairperson Cheloy Garafil of the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) for her steadfast support in facilitating the smooth importation and transfer of rice.
