In a letter request dated Dec. 3 to the city council, Mayor Albee Benitez highlighted businessman Hans Sy's outstanding role in the local economy, including his leadership in the establishment of SM City-Bacolod, the redevelopment of Manokan Country, and other significant projects that have spurred investment and growth here.

His business achievements, philanthropic efforts, and commitment to social responsibility have made him a valuable asset to this city, Benitez said.

Sy is expected to join the Bacolaodiat Festival from Jan. 31 to Feb. 2 where he will be formally recognized.

“I think it’s high time to give him honor,” said  Councilor Jason Villarosa, chairman of the Committee on Tourism.

Earlier this year, another Filipino-Chinese tycoon, Lucio Co, was also honored for his contributions to this city’s economic growth during the Bacolaodiat Festival.

Sy, 68, is the chairman of the executive committee of SM Prime. He served as president until 2016. He also holds prominent positions at China Banking Corp. and National University.

He will be recognized as part of the Chinese Lunar New Year celebration in 2025.
