Hayden Blankley got some measure of redemption and helped Eastern slam the door on Barangay Ginebra's comeback hopes, 93-90, in the PBA Season 49 Commissioner’s Cup at the Ynares Center in Antipolo on Sunday, Dec. 15.
Part of the Bay Area Dragons that lost to the Kings in the Commissioner’s Cup Finals two seasons ago, Blankley exacted some sort of revenge with a layup and a pair of free throws as Eastern improved to a 5-1 record.
Ginebra, on the other hand, playing its third game in five days span, absorbed its first defeat for a 2-1 slate.
The Hong Kong-based team led by as many as 10 points in the final frame but had to fend off a late fightback from Ginera with Blankley making it 91-86 with 41 seconds left.
The Kings kept themselves within striking distance with free throws from RJ Abarrientos and Japeth Aguilar cutting the deficit down to one, 90-91, but Blankley sealed the deal with two free throws with three ticks left.
Blankley had eight of his 25 points in the final frame to go with his five rebounds and four assists while import Chris McLaughlin finished with 20 points and 21 rebounds laced with six assists and two blocks.
Ramon Cao had 14 while another former Bay Area player Glen Yang had 11.
Aguilar had 26 points and eight rebounds while Justin Brownlee added 18 points and 12 rebounds although he shot poorly from the distance with a 0-of-4 clip from the four and 0-of-6 from the three-point territory.
