Remembering Judge Jose R. de Venecia Sr.

The overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad has marked a pivotal moment in Syria’s tumultuous history, ending over five decades of authoritarian rule. This transition presents both profound challenges and opportunities for the Syrian people and the international community.

The resilience and determination of the Syrian populace have been instrumental in this political shift. For over a decade, they endured unimaginable suffering — bombardments, displacement, and unspeakable human rights violations. As the nation embarks on a monumental task of rebuilding their country, the active participation of its citizens in governance and community initiatives will be crucial. Their collective efforts can lay the foundation for a more inclusive and democratic society.

The global community faces a critical juncture in supporting Syria’s transition. International actors must prioritize humanitarian aid, assist in the reconstruction of war-torn infrastructure, and support the establishment of democratic institutions. Moreover, fostering regional stability and preventing the resurgence of extremist groups will require coordinated efforts and sustained commitment.

Our personal visit to Syria in 2019 provided a firsthand view of the profound human suffering and resilience amid ongoing conflict. Witnessing the devastation in cities like Homs and the enduring spirit of its people underscored the urgent need for peace and stability. The scars of war were evident, yet so was the hope for a better future.

In the aftermath of prolonged conflicts, promoting peace and understanding becomes imperative. Syria’s journey offers valuable lessons for other regions grappling with wars, territorial disputes, and internal strife. Emphasizing dialogue, reconciliation, and inclusive governance can pave the way for healing and sustainable peace.

Our wife Gina and we convey our heartfelt sympathies to the Raul family on the passing of their beloved matriarch, former Sen. Santanina “Nina” T. Rasul.

The first and by far the only Muslim woman to be elected senator, she was indeed a trailblazer for the empowerment of women and of Muslim and cultural minorities.

She authored landmark laws that dismantled gender discrimination, opened the doors of the Philippine Military Academy to women, allocated funds for women in all government agencies, declared March 8 as National Women’s Day, and granted civil service eligibility to government employees who have worked in a career civil service position for at least seven years.

As then Speaker of the House of Representatives from 1992 to 1998, we had the opportunity to work with Sen. Rasul when she was a senator and then as member of the government peace panel in the historic peace talks with the Moro National Liberation Front (MILF) during the administration of President Fidel V. Ramos. We witnessed up close her profound commitment to peace and development in Mindanao, especially in the Muslim areas.

Sen. Nina Rasul will forever be remembered as a transformative leader and trailblazer who devoted her life to creating a more inclusive and equitable Philippines.
