De La Salle star Mike Phillips believes that miracles do happen on the floor. The big man knew that one's courage is amplified when armed with a silent prayer.
Phillips' faith never wavered even in the face of adversity in Game 2 of the UAAP Season 87 Finals last Wednesday, Dec. 11.
“God is so good,” said an emotional Phillips, who tallied 18 points, 12 rebounds and two steals, after the Green Archers pulled off a 76-75 win over the UP Fighting Maroons to arrange a winner-take-all Game 3 on Sunday, Dec. 15.
“Not just because we won. But, because God has been with us through highs and lows,” he added.
“That's our faith in Jesus Christ. That's our faith in each other. We put our total trust in each other. That's why when we pull through. I just praise God [and] I praise Jesus Christ.”
The 6-foot-8 Phillips, who is part of this year’s Mythical Five, also said that La Salle head coach Topex Robinson was inspirational during their practice where some of their family members and former players were present as well.
“I wish you guys could've been there yesterday during our practice. Coach Topex gave one of the most amazing prayers that I've heard from a man…,” the Fil-American cager continued.
And it worked well, with Phillips and the entire Archers side putting up a gallant comeback after being down 63-71 midway of the fourth quarter.
Giving his all along with back-to-back MVP Kevin Quiambao, La Salle survived a nail-biting finish that saw the Taft-based squad win by the slimmest of margins.
