Cops run after phone snatcher in Makati

A robbery incident turned into a movie-like police chase after the suspects tried to ram a police officer while onboard a motorcycle in Barangay Bel Air, Makati City, the Makati City Police said on Thursday, Dec. 12.

Based on the police report, two individuals were waiting for their Grab driver in front of a hotpot restaurant on N. Garcia Street when two men onboard a black Yamaha Aerox motorcycle snatched the cellphone of one of the victims and escaped towards Makati Avenue.

The victim said his phone can be traced using a tracking application, prompting the police to launch a follow-up operation to arrest the suspects. However, the phone's tracking signal was lost upon arriving in Pasay City, its last known location.

"On their way back to their Sub Station, the responding police officers noticed a suspicious motorcycle matching the description of the suspects' vehicle on the side street near Makati Avenue. Upon slowing down to inspect, the motorcycle's rider noticed the presence of police officers and fled the scene, prompting a chase," the police said.

One of the officers alighted from their police mobile and chased the suspects on foot.

"Upon reaching a bank situated on Makati Avenue in Barangay Poblacion, the suspects made a dangerous U-turn and aggressively accelerated towards the officer. In response, the latter was compelled to draw his firearm and engaged the suspects to protect himself as they fled towards Buendia," the police explained.

Makati Police chief Col. Joseph Talento ordered the Intelligence Section and other operating units to conduct a follow-up operation to identify and apprehend the suspects.

The Anti-Carnapping Unit has also been instructed to identify the motorcycle used in the crime.

"The Makati City Police remains committed to solving this case and ensures the safety and security of the community. Despite the complainant’s decision not to file charges, efforts continue to apprehend the suspects involved," Talento said.
