University of Santo Tomas women's basketball head coach Haydee Ong knew something is special about Bridgette Santos.

The veteran mentor believed she only needed to be tough to guide the promising cager into the right direction.
“Very happy ako kasi sabi ko nga sa kanya throughout the season ‘di ko pa nakikita ‘yong full potential nya talaga,” said Ong after UST’s 78-68 Game 2 triumph over NU Wednesday, Dec. 11, at Mall of Asia Arena.
“Bridgette came in sakin, alam ko she’s very athletic, taas tumalon [and] may three-point [shooting], kumpleto talaga eh, kumbaga parang nahihiya pag naglalaro,” she added. “But, today pinakita nya sakin na [kaya niyang maging] unstoppable.”
And Santos, a third year student, is grateful for Ong’s passion for developing players like her.
“Every training kasi naiiyak nako, kasi si coach Haydee lagi akong pinapagalitan,” said Santos.
“Do’n ko nahugot ‘yong lakas ng loob ko na makipagsabayan sa kanila, kasi si coach hindi siya tumigil na maniwala sakin,” she added. “Ako nalang hinihintay nila eh.. ito sa tingin ko ito na ‘yong chance ko na makapag-contribute.”
The 5-foot-4 guard rose to the occasion after dropping her career-high of 27 points, plus two rebounds, four assists and two steals in 31 minutes of play.
Also starring for the Espana-based squad was Karylle Sierba with a career-best 18 points in just 12 and a half minutes to backstop star dribbler Kent Pastrana, who tallied 11 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Ong, a former national team member in the late 1980s, was impressed with Sierba's contributions which dashed the hopes of NU aces Camille Clarin, Ann Pingol, Angel Surada and Cielo Pagdulagan.
“I’m very proud, sabi ko nga kay Karylle, you’ll playing limited minutes sabi ko, pero sabi ko every time na bubunutin kita, just make sure you represent UST very well,” Ong continued.
“At pakita mo kung bakit ka nandito sa UST, bakit ka produkto ng UST. Napakagaling talaga, napapa-wow ako kay Karylle kanina,” she added.
Both sides duke it out as UST guns for a two-peat while NU tries to reclaim its lost glory in Game 3 Sunday, Dec. 15, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
