Baguio student saves elderly man's life

BAGUIO CITY – A 16-year-old student from Barangay Pinget here was hailed a hero for saving the life of a 64-year-old heart attack victim recently.

JC Sumbad was riding a jeepney when he saw an elderly man lying face down in Dizon Subdivision.

Sumbad alighted and performed first aid and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation on the victim.

Victor Chua, the son of the victim, thanked Sumbad for his selfless act. 

Chua said that medical responders credited Sumbad’s quick thinking and response for saving his father’s life.

“If not for JC, my father wouldn’t have made it,” Chua said.

The victim, a stroke survivor, is recovering in the hospital and is scheduled for a heart bypass operation.

Chua said Sumbad’s actions deserve recognition.

“I offered a cash reward, but he politely declined, saying that kindness should be normalized,” Chua said.

Sumbad, a special education student at Easter College, has been helping others. He assisted another individual in need here last July.

Mayor Benjamin Magalong here cited Sumbad’s heroic deed.

“Your compassion and love for others is commendable and worth emulating. We hope that more youth will follow your lead,” Magalong said.
