Bacolod ready to aid LGUs affected by Kanlaon eruption

BACOLOD CITY – The city government is prepared to assist local government units in Negros Occidental affected by the eruption of Kanlaon Volcano.

Mayor Albee Benitez said that he is awaiting an update from La Castellana on the number of the evacuees but the city has provided necessary supplies and transportation assistance to affected residents.

Benitez said that two evacuation centers here are ready for any worst-case scenario. “We’ve ensured that even during December, we have enough resources to address any eventualities,” Benitez said.

The mayor said that Bacolod is spending cautiously this Christmas due to recent calamities – stronger typhoons, more intense rains, and a volcanic eruption.

“We need to prepare for possible disasters, and spending wisely on holiday events is the right approach,” he said. “We need to be more resilient.”

Benitez said that they will assess the situation on the ground before deciding if additional financial support is needed. “We’ll see. We will definitely fill the gap if it’s necessary,” he added.

The mayor said those who want to help may channel donations through the Department of Social Services and Development (DSSD).

Benitez said that this city has been spared from the eruption’s effects due to the prevailing wind direction. "There have been no reports of the city being affected,” he said.

Benitez said that the city remains prepared for an eruption and has sufficient logistical supplies.
