Calvin Oftana fired a career-high 42 points to power TNT to its breakthrough 103-100 win over Magnolia in the PBA Season 49 Commissioner’s Cup at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium on Wednesday, Dec. 11.
The Tropang Giga gunner fired career-best nine triples to help his team establish control in the contest before fending off a late fightback from the Hotshots to finally barge into the win column after a 0-2 start to the mid-season conference.
Oftana started out hot and finished with 23 points spiked by four triples at the break before drilling five more in the second half – none bigger than the last that gave TNT a commanding 12-point lead, 102-90 with 1:22 left in the game.
Magnolia, however, refused to go down without a fight and went on last-ditch 7-1 rally before Rondae Hollis-Jefferson nailed a free-throw to seal the deal. Mark Barroca still nailed a trey to settle the score.
Hollis-Jefferson also provided the scoring punch with 41 points to go with his 13 rebounds, five assists, four steals and a block.
