Canlaon City bans firecrackers, pyrotechnics

BACOLOD CITY – The city government of Canlaon in Negros Oriental has strictly prohibited the use, sale, possession, and distribution of all types of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices to ensure  public safety following the eruption of Kanlaon Volcano.

Mayor Jose Chubasco Cardenas issued an executive order on Wednesday, Dec. 11, enforcing the prohibition as the city faces heightened risks due to its proximity to Kanlaon currently under Alert Level 3.

Cardenas stressed that the use of firecrackers or pyrotechnic devices may further pose dangers, such as triggering landslides or panic, among evacuees.

He said that the health, safety, and welfare of Canlaon residents and visitors remain a top priority of the local government.

He cited in the executive order Republic Act No. 7183, an act that regulates the sale, manufacture, distribution, and use of firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices to prevent accidents.

Cardenas noted that this move is necessary to prevent potential injuries, property damage, and disturbance caused by the use of firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices, especially during disaster situations or heightened volcanic activity.

Cardenas said that this prohibition does not apply to public or ceremonial firework displays specifically authorized by the city government, provided such events are organized by licensed professionals and approved by the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) and the Philippine National Police (PNP).

Business establishments found violating this order may face additional administrative penalties, including the possible suspension or revocation of business permits.

The police, in coordination with barangay officials and other concerned agencies, shall conduct inspections to ensure compliance.

Confiscated firecrackers and pyrotechnic devices shall be properly documented and disposed of in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
