Support local this Christmas: A gift for your loved ones and the economy

This Christmas, we have the opportunity to spread the holiday spirit while contributing to the nation’s economic recovery by choosing to buy local products as gifts. Supporting homegrown businesses goes beyond thoughtful gift-giving—it strengthens local industries, provides jobs, and fosters economic growth.

When you buy local, the ripple effect on the economy is profound. Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) records show that micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) contribute more than 35 percent of the Philippines’ GDP and employ 66.97 percent of the workforce. Increased demand during the holiday season can directly impact small businesses, enabling them to expand operations, hire more workers, and improve their offerings. This cycle empowers more individuals with purchasing power, thereby stimulating economic activity across sectors.

For example, a Marikina shoemaker who receives more orders for handcrafted leather shoes might hire additional workers, increasing household incomes in their community. Those workers can then afford to shop for local goods, supporting other businesses like food stalls or tailors. The result? A thriving local economy where benefits are shared.

When you choose to buy local closer to home, buying food and gift items from neighbors with micro enterprises, the ripple effect on the community will be more apparent.  It will bring the message of Christmas throughout the year.

Aside from economic benefits, buying local is an act of preserving culture and supporting sustainability. Locally made products often showcase Filipino artistry and use eco-friendly materials, reducing carbon footprints compared to imported goods. For example, handcrafted products like jewelry, leather and handwoven bags, bamboo crafts, wood carvings, and many more, are not only beautiful but also sustainably produced. There’s no shortage of locally made items that make exceptional Christmas gifts.

Government supports local products in many ways. DTI’s Go Lokal! campaign has been going on for many years.  The program aims to help the MSMEs enter the mainstream market via the free services offered by DTI, one of which is assistance to develop commercially viable products.

Early this month, it launched the DTI-Bagong Pilipinas Christmas Village Fairs, a series of shopping events to celebrate the creativity of Filipino entrepreneurs, offering unique gifts, holiday treats, and handcrafted products.

“We are excited to launch the first-ever DTI-Bagong Pilipinas Christmas Village Fairs, a significant initiative aimed at empowering our MSMEs by providing them with a dedicated platform to reach a broader audience during the holiday season. This event not only opens doors for MSMEs to connect with consumers and institutional buyers but also strengthens their presence in the local market, leveraging the unique charm of Filipino-made products,” DTI Secretary Ma. Cristina A. Roque said.

The government’s “unwavering support for local manufacturers and producers, especially in the vital food and beverage sector,” was reiterated by President Marcos on Nov. 29 during the inauguration of the Universal Robina Corporation flour milling plant in Sariaya, Quezon.

“We will continue to create a supportive environment for our partners in the private sector through laws and agreements that promote the interests of both manufacturers and consumers alike,” he said.

Choosing to buy local this Christmas is a simple yet impactful way to support fellow Filipinos. It fosters a spirit of community, uplifts small businesses, and creates a more self-reliant and vibrant economy. So this year, let your gifts tell a story—one of solidarity, heritage, and hope. Together, we can make the season brighter for everyone.
