Ayala-led Globe Telecom Inc. is set to develop the first off-grid solar-powered cellular site in Tawi-Tawi in a bid to provide mobile and data connectivity to residents in the remote area.
In a statement over the weekend, Globe said some 10,000 residents on Turtle islands are set to benefit from the establishment of the new cellular site, which will be powered by solar energy and equipped with an advanced antenna system and AI-driven energy management with remote monitoring.
The local government allocated a parcel of land on Taganak Island for the project. It is set for completion in mid-2025.
Solar power eliminates the need for diesel generators to operate the fully off-grid cell site. It is seen as a game-changer in an area where transportation is limited and fuel deliveries are unpredictable. It is expected to avoid approximately 40 metric tons carbon emission annually.
"This project is a solid testament to Globe’s commitment to sustainable connectivity, made possible by a strong partnership with the government and local leaders to empower even our most remote communities,” said Gerhard Tan, Senior Director and Head of Technology Strategy and Innovations at Globe.
The company said it was working closely with the Local Government of Turtle Islands, the 2nd Marine Brigade of the Western Mindanao Command, and the Bangsamoro Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources, and Energy to complete the project.
“Connecting Turtle Islands to the digital world marks a new chapter for our community, bringing opportunities for growth, eco-tourism, and security through our partnership with Globe and our dedicated government partners,” said Municipal Mayor Mohammad Faizal Jamalul.
