In a media interview in Laurel, Batangas on Monday, Nov. 4, the Chief Executive was candid about what he felt was lacking in the government’s response to “Kristine”.

“I'll tell you the truth. It's never enough. It's never enough. I wish we could do more,” Marcos said.

“We're doing everything that we can but... You know when you lose a life, you lose a life. What can you do about that? It's a terrible tragedy,” he added.

The President was in Batangas province, one of the hardest hit by Kristine, where at least 59 were killed mostly by rain-induced landslides and around 3,000 families or 11,000 individuals still remain in evacuation centers.

During the distribution of presidential assistance to farmers, fisherfolk, and their families in Talisay, Batangas also on Monday, Marcos said he ordered government agencies to further enhance the country’s disaster preparedness to reduce the impact of calamities and avoid fatalities.

His administration’s goal, the President added, is not to lose any more lives because of calamities.

Over the weekend, the Chief Executive issued Proclamation No. 728, declaring Nov. 4 as a Day of National Mourning in solidarity with the bereaved families and loved ones of those who died because of the typhoon.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported as of Oct. 31, that 139 people died nationwide because of the severe tropical storm.

Through the Office of the President (OP), Marcos led the distribution of financial assistance worth P10,000 each to 10 select farmers and fishermen from Laurel, Batangas. A P10-million check was also handed over to the municipality.

Additionally, the President also distributed the 200 kits of housing materials donated by the Metrobank Foundation.
