New information technology economic zone opens in Calapan City

CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro – A modern information technology (IT) economic zone was inaugurated on Wednesday, Nov. 27, in this city.

It is envisioned to provide more jobs and accelerate the economic growth of this province.

The facility was constructed in a 10,000-square meter property near the provincial hospital compound and regional offices of government agencies.

Gov. Humerlito A. Dolor said the IT park is located within a wide area where a government center, central transport terminal, and a hostel for different sectors like senior citizens were also constructed.

Sen. Francis N. Tolentino, who graced the occasion, said the IT park should embody the aspirations of the Filipino people to be at the forefront of progress while staying through to their cultural roots.

Tolentino described Dolor as a visionary leader who has long championed the role of local governments in driving national development.

“Progress should not be confined to Metro Manila, it should thrive in provinces such as Oriental Mindoro which is rich in resources, talents, and resilience,” said Tolentino.

Dolor thanked Senators Christopher Go, Win Gatchalian, and then senator now Education Secretary Sonny Angara for extending the bulk of the needed funds to start the construction of facilities and other amenities in the park.

The project was cited by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) as a new growth area for economic zones.

PEZA is the government agency that promotes the establishment of economic zones in the country for foreign investments. IT and BPO (business process outsourcing) are activities that qualify for registration in economic zones.

Other officials who graced the occasion were Calapan City Mayor Malou F. Morillo, Bryan Poe of FPJ party-list, members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan led by Vice Gov. Ejay Falcon, and representatives of government agencies.
