Have you ever dreamed of turning your passion into a real-life achievement? For many, that dream may seem unattainable, but for 23-year-old Russel Reyes from Bulacan, it became a reality. He transformed his love for video games, particularly racing games, into something much more significant than just virtual trophies. His is a story of how dedication, hard work, and having the right mindset can turn everyday hobbies into extraordinary opportunities.
A digital start to a racing dream
Russel Reyes's journey began in 2019. Like many car enthusiasts, he had a passion for the speed and adrenaline of racing. However, he wasn't putting pedal to the metal on real roads or racetracks but was competing virtually from home. And he was good at it. He was winning races so impressively that an online competitor from Germany, after discovering that Russel was outperforming him with just a game controller, sent Russel his old and unused Logitech G29 steering wheel controller. With this gift, Russel immersed himself further in virtual racing, and his abilities flourished through relentless practice.
From 2020 to 2022, the popularity of virtual activities surged due to the Covid pandemic, with many turning to sim racing to pursue their driving passions from home. In early 2021, a local sim racer saw potential in Russel and sponsored him with more professional gear. The upgraded equipment allowed Russel to elevate his hobby into a more serious pursuit. His skills on the virtual racetrack began to shine, but it was his countless hours of practice refining his techniques, and commitment to self-improvement, that truly made the difference.
In early 2022, as his online racing skills were gaining fame, Russel was invited to join a Jakarta, Indonesia-based racing team called JMX Phantom, known for its involvement in the e-sports industry.
Alongside his new teammates, Russel competed online in a racing simulator called Assetto Corsa Competizione, where his exposure to more experienced drivers allowed him to learn better skills.
Under the guidance of JMX Phantom’s data engineer, Ming Ko, Russel unlocked the skill to read vehicle telemetry data and gained new insights into how his car behaved, enabling him to understand his race car more thoroughly and enhance his driving skills. His natural talent, combined with disciplined practice and data analysis, propelled him forward and opened doors to real-life opportunities.
Taking the leap into reality
In 2022, Russel's journey took a significant leap forward. After securing second place in the Toyota Gazoo Racing-sponsored GT Cup, a virtual racing competition, he earned a spot in the Toyota Gazoo Racing Autocross Challenge, a real-world event where he drove an actual Toyota Vios race car. Not only did he compete, but he excelled as well, winning two out of three rounds and claiming the championship in his class.
While Russel found success in virtual racing, the realities of real-world racing presented challenges that no game could prepare him for. The physical forces of a speeding car, the heat inside the vehicle, and the strain on his body were new experiences.
In video games, you don’t feel the heat of the engine or the physical demands of competitive driving, but Russel noted that about 80 percent of what he learned from virtual racing translated to real-life racing. Concepts like optimal turning techniques, braking points, and proper acceleration were skills he honed through sim racing.
In 2022, he also had the opportunity to drive a single-seater Radical race car, marking his first encounter with the demanding nature of real, high-speed performance race cars. It was also around this time that Russel started working with a local race team called Obengers Racing Team as a data analyst, leveraging the skills he gained from JMX Phantom. He learned to interpret data from cars, examining how drivers utilized brakes and throttle and approached corners. This expertise improved his performance and aided other drivers, showcasing how Russel integrated his gaming background with a strong work ethic to advance in motorsports.
By 2023, he was competing in real-life events and assisting professional teams in analyzing race data. This unique skill set positioned Russel as a formidable competitor both on the track and behind the scenes as he continued to learn and improve, balancing driving with technical expertise in data analysis.
2024: A year of achievement
This year, Russel’s journey reached new heights. After winning the Autocross Challenge, he was invited back to compete in the Novice Class of the higher-tier Toyota Gazoo Racing Philippine Cup, a series of circuit racing competitions at the Clark International Speedway with the Vios Race car. After three grueling race weekends throughout the year, Russel was crowned Novice Class Champion of the 2024 Toyota Gazoo Racing Philippine Cup, a monumental achievement that recognized his growth as a driver and his deserving spot on the track.
When asked about the role of sim racing in developing his real-world driving skills, Russel remarked: “The combination of sim racing and learning how to read race car data telemetry really gave me an edge. Sim racing is a legitimate entry point into motorsports, much like karting, and should not be underestimated. It provides an affordable means to practice specific car/track combinations and enhance your driving skill set.” This was an insight that highlighted the value of skills learned in the virtual realm, which can serve as a stepping stone for anyone aspiring to race in reality.
An inspirational journey
Russel's journey inspires us to recognize how passion, hard work, and technology can converge to create remarkable opportunities. In a field often perceived as exclusive to the wealthy or well-connected, Russel’s story defies the norm. He didn’t come from a traditional racing background nor did he have abundant resources. Instead, he channeled his love for cars and gaming into countless hours of practice, transforming it into something substantial. His journey exemplifies how anyone can realize their dreams by embracing opportunities, even when they stem from something as simple as a gaming setup.
Russel has transitioned from gaming in his room to racing on real tracks, real challenges, and standing on actual podiums. For all racing enthusiasts, it conveys a powerful message: regardless of your starting point, your passion and perseverance can lead to opportunities you never thought possible.
