At an age when most people are content to retire and reflect on life’s journey, Evelyn Ang continues to blaze a trail of leadership and inspiration. As the 91-year-old president of Western Guaranty, Evelyn remains a daily presence at the helm of the company she helped build, embodying a unique blend of grace, wisdom, and boundless energy.

“I work until 11 in the evening at home,” she said with a sparkle in her eyes, her girlish giggle underscoring a zest for life that defies her years. Her daily routine and enduring passion for work are a testament to her unwavering dedication, even as she celebrates her remarkable journey of more than nine decades.

Partnership in vision and values

Western Guaranty, founded in 1964, owes much of its legacy to Evelyn and her late husband, Lucio Ang.

Lucio, a visionary entrepreneur, balanced his professional responsibilities with playful pursuits like photography and bowling. His approach to life left an indelible mark on Evelyn.

“My husband lived a full life, and that inspires me to do the same,” Evelyn remarked, her passion for gardening mirroring Lucio’s own pursuit of hobbies. Together, they built not just a company but a family-oriented culture that continues to thrive today.

Humble beginnings of a legacy

Western Guaranty’s story began with a modest initial capital of ₱2.5 million and a small office in Binondo. Evelyn, who served as the company’s cashier, left her job in an optical company to fully dedicate herself to this new venture.

“We started with just eight employees and rented office space,” Evelyn recalled. Despite limited resources, the couple’s vision for the company was clear: to provide people with reliable insurance when they needed it most. Their perseverance paid off, and Western Guaranty soon established a reputation for trust and service excellence.

Today, the company has grown into one of the Philippines’ most stable insurance firms, with 12 provincial offices, a Makati Business Center, and a network of over 1,000 agents nationwide.

Family that works together

Western Guaranty’s success lies not just in its growth but in the strong sense of family that Evelyn has cultivated. Many employees have stayed with the company for decades, some spanning multiple generations.

“Our employees are family. They’re happy here, and we help them in any way we can,” Evelyn said. This pro-employee culture has fostered loyalty and trust, with staff affectionately referring to Evelyn as “Mommy.”

Her son, Levy Edwin, now serves as chairman of the board, ensuring the family’s legacy of leadership continues. Yet, Evelyn remains an active force in the company, personally signing papers and staying deeply involved in its operations.

Secrets to long and fulfilling life

Evelyn attributes her longevity to her positive outlook and a surprising daily ritual: “I drink a can of regular Coke every day!” she laughed. Beyond her unique dietary choice, she credits her peaceful mindset for keeping her young.

“I don’t hold grudges. I have no enemies. I don’t get angry,” she said with sincerity.

Evelyn Ang’s journey is a remarkable testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and purpose. Her life story is not just a narrative of personal and professional success; it’s an inspiration to those around her—proof that age is no barrier to making an impact.

As she continues to lead Western Guaranty into the future, Evelyn remains a living reminder that life’s twilight years can still shine brightly, driven by purpose and an enduring love for what one does.
