House Speaker Martin Romualdez has likened the recent controversial actions of his one-time ally, Vice President Sara Duterte's to a "nightmare" that will haunt Filipinos for years.
"The actions of the Vice President will go down the annals of history like a nightmare that will haunt our people for generations, and this House will do whatever we can to protect the dignity of this institution and the 100 million Filipinos we represent,” Romualdez said in a speech on Monday, Nov. 25.
Romualdez addessed his House colleagues at the start of plenary session Monday, even as the chamber tried to make sense of Duterte’s aggressive actions and remarks the past few days.
"This House of the People is a sacred institution. It is the embodiment of the people’s will, and its dignity must be upheld at all times," said the leader of the 300-plus strong House of Representatives.
"Ang Kongreso ay sagrado. Ang mga patakaran at seguridad dito ay hindi nilalabag. Ang paglabag sa mga ito ay kawalang-galang sa taumbayan na ating pinaglilingkuran,” he said.
(Congress is sacred. The rules and security measures here aren't violated. If they are vuolated, then this is a disrespect to the people whom we serve.
Romualdez, Leyte 1st district congressman and Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD), was alluding to her former party-mate Duterte's actions.
Vice President Duterte defied House rules and camped out at the House of Representatives from Thursday night to Saturday morning in a bid to accompany her detained chief-of-staff, Zuleika Lopez.
For two nights and two days, Duterte violated visitation rules as well as a direct plea from House Sergeant-at-Arms Napoleon Taas for her to leave the premises. She reportedly compromised security at the chamber during the time that she was there.

"Disrespect for the protocols, security measures, and leadership of this institution is not just a breach of rules — it is a breach of trust," Romualdez said.
"To mock our protocols, to defy our orders, and to malign our leaders is to disrespect the Filipino people who elected us to serve," emphasized the House chief.
"This House operates on the principles of the rule of law, transparency, and accountability. These principles are the bedrock of our democracy. To undermine them is to weaken the foundation upon which our nation stands," he added.
