Mayor's group decries Sara's kill threat vs PBBM, House speaker

The 149-strong League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP) chided Vice-President Sara Duterte for her threat to have the President, the First Lady and House Speaker Martin Romualdez assassinated.

In a statement, the LCP described the recent outburst of the Vice-President as “both unbecoming of her office and deeply irresponsible.’’

“Any suggestion or statement that the Vice President would be harmed and the heinous instruction of retaliation to, in turn, harm the President, the First Lady, the Speaker of the House, or any key government official is deeply irresponsible and a grave threat to our democracy and the rule of law,’’ the statement read.

It added that the Duterte's statement endangers not only the safety of our leaders but also the peace and security of the entire Filipino nation.

The LCP asserted that the use of public funds by the Vice President’s Office “must be addressed in a manner befitting the gravity of public trust, not through accusations, name-calling or divisive conduct.’’

“We urge all parties involved to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and respect, particularly among our government officials, who represent the Filipino people,’’ it added.

The mayor’s group also pointed out that the Filipino people deserve unity and decisive action, not unnecessary and harmful bickering as it stands in steadfast support of President Marcos and his administration, and we call on all leaders to prioritize the welfare of our citizens over personal disputes. 

The LCP pointed out that it is imperative that government resources, energy, and focus be directed toward addressing the pressing economic and social challenges our country faces.

“It is time for all leaders to act with wisdom, restraint, and a firm commitment to the Filipino people. Let us work together for the betterment of our nation, upholding the principles of democracy, respect, and progress for all,’’ the LCP continued.

The LCP call to end the Marcos-Duterte bickering was signed by LCP national president and Quezon City Mayor Joy G. Belmonte and LCP national chairman and Bacolod City Mayor Albee A. Benitez.
