DOT to host Terra Madre Asia Pacific 2025; pushing PH as gastronomy hub

The Department of Tourism (DOT) has confirmed that the Philippines will host the inaugural Terra Madre Asia Pacific in 2025, further solidifying its aspirations to become a global leader in gastronomy tourism.

During the 2nd Terra Madre Visayas regional event on Nov. 21 in Negros Occidental, DOT Secretary Christina Garcia-Frasco announced Bacolod City as the official venue for this prestigious gathering.

Recognized as the Slow Food International Hub for Asia Pacific, the Philippines is set to take a leading role in promoting the principles of the global Slow Food movement, which emphasizes the preservation of food cultures, sustainable practices, and ethical food systems.

Launched in 1989, the movement has grown to include millions of supporters across over 160 countries, advocating mindful food choices that foster cultural appreciation, environmental sustainability, and equitable food production.

Under Frasco’s leadership, the DOT has prioritized gastronomy tourism as part of its cultural tourism initiatives, aiming to promote Filipino cuisine as a vital element of the nation’s heritage.

She highlighted efforts to integrate sustainable food practices into tourism programs, enhancing the country’s global culinary appeal.

“The Slow Food movement in the Philippines is increasing the value proposition of our destinations while fostering regeneration of our natural resources and ingredients and expanding economic opportunities one meaningful and delicious dish at a time,” Frasco said, underscoring gastronomy tourism as a priority under President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.'s administration.

Local officials, including Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson and Bacolod City Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez, expressed their support for the DOT’s efforts, recognizing Terra Madre Asia Pacific 2025 as an opportunity to promote biodiversity, empower local farmers, and celebrate the region’s unique food culture.

The DOT said that the event is expected to enhance the Philippines' reputation as a gastronomy hub, attracting global attention to its rich culinary heritage and advancing sustainable food systems that inspire positive change worldwide.
