Death toll in Negros Occidental encounter rises to 7


BACOLOD CITY – Seven New People’s Army rebels have been killed as the Army  reported another casualty in the Thursday clash in Barangay Gatuslao, Candoni, Negros Occidental.

Police Major Nelson Amsiwen Jr., Candoni police chief, said that a young NPA fighter was found wounded while hiding by military tracker dogs scouring the area during the clearing operation.

Soldiers provided first aid but he died on the way to the hospital.

He was the first to be identified and his remains have been claimed by his family. Police declined to identify him.

Amsiwen said that three out of the six remaining fatalities have been identified by authorities. Their names were not disclosed.

They were buried in a public cemetery on Friday, Nov. 22, in Candoni. The burial was facilitated by the municipal government.

The Army 47th Infantry Battalion  and 15th IB clashed with the remnants of the dismantled South West Front (SWF), Komiteng Rehiyon-Negros, Cebu, Bohol, Siquijor (KR-NCBS) while responding to a report on the presence of armed men conducting extortion and atrocities in the area on Thursday, Nov. 21.

Soldiers continue to conduct pursuit and clearing operations in the area to ensure the security of surrounding communities.
