LEGAZPI, Albay--No less than Speaker Martin Romualdez is challenging Vice President Sara Duterte to appear before the House inquiry on the alleged misuse of confidential and intelligence funds (CIFs) by the Office of the Vice President (OVP) and Department of Education (DepEd).
Of course, this entails taking an oath to "tell the truth and nothing but the truth".
"Eh ‘di dapat lang siyang sumipot at mag-oath at mag-salita at mag-eksplika dahil lahat ng mga opisyales niya...siya lang yata may alam kung ano’ng nangyari d’yan sa mga pondo eh," Romualdez said in a chance interview with Manila-based reporters here.
(Then she should appear, take an oath, talk, and explain because all of her officials...only she knows what happened to those funds.)
"Kaya dapat siya ang mag-eksplika, ‘wag na niyang ibigay sa mga officials niya sa OVP at sa DepEd. Sana lang magsalita," added the leader of the 300-plus strong House of Representatives.
(That's why she should explain herself, she shouldn't pass it on to her officials under OVP and DepEd. Hopefully she talks.)
This was the first time that Romualdez commented on the issue.
Conducting the investigation on the alleged improper use of CIFs amounting to P612.5 million between 2022 and 2023 is the Manila 3rd district Rep. Joel Chua-chaired House Committee on Good Government and Public Accountability.
Vice President Duterte served as DepEd secretary from June 30, 2022 to July 19, 2024.
Out of the six hearings of the Chua panel so far, the Vice President has only attended the first hearing, wherein she refused to take her oath. She also left early during that particular hearing.
Romualdez acted as one of Duterte’s campaign managers in the lead-up to the May 2022 elections. They have since had a falling out, with the lady official turning into an administration critic.
