MR.DIY proudly welcomes its first neurodiverse interns as part of its Store Internship for Special Learners program. Through this initiative, MR.DIY aims to provide meaningful work experience, fostering inclusivity and empowerment for neurodiverse individuals in the workplace.

In a groundbreaking move that underscores its commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), MR.DIY Philippines proudly introduces the Store Internship for Neurodiverse Learners, an initiative designed to provide meaningful retail work experience to individuals on the autism spectrum.

This program aligns with MR.DIY's dedication to fostering an inclusive workplace that values empowerment and equitable opportunities.

Through this initiative, neurodiverse individuals gain hands-on retail experience, opening doors to personal growth and professional development. This project is a collaboration with Candent Learning Haus, a Parañaque City-based institution specializing in life skills training for neurodiverse individuals.

Candent has a history of successful partnerships with local businesses, such as Mama Lou's, B Hotel, and Cuppa Coffee, securing impactful internship placements for its students.

Following its first collaboration, MR.DIY recently launched a second partnership with Marvelous Minds Tutorial Center, a Marikina-based facility dedicated to adult learners with special needs. This partnership was formalized on November 5, with a Memorandum of Agreement marking a shared commitment to workplace inclusivity.

Empowering neurodiverse individuals through practical experience

The partnership supports the efforts of Candent Learning Haus and Marvelous Minds to blend classroom learning with real-world experience. As part of their Work LIFE Skills curriculum, students from these institutions will engage in day-to-day operations at MR.DIY stores, learning customer service, visual merchandising, and other valuable skills.

This program is also part of MR.DIY’s Acts of Kindness (AOK) Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, which supports the company's mission to create inclusive and equitable work opportunities for diverse communities.

MR.DIY’s new interns, along with representatives from MR.DIY Philippines and Marvelous Minds Tutorial Center, recently celebrated the program's launch, marking a significant step in equipping neurodiverse interns with valuable customer service and retail skills.

The interns bring unique strengths, such as an exceptional focus on routine and attention to detail, which, with the right support, will foster their independence and personal growth.

Cultivating an inclusive retail environment

The pilot program, set to run for at least 10 weeks, strives to create a welcoming environment that raises awareness and opens doors for neurodivergent individuals in the workplace. To foster understanding and acceptance, the interns will wear special ID tags during their shifts to help customers recognize them and engage positively.

In support of the interns’ success, MR.DIY encourages store staff and customers to follow simple guidelines:

·       Be patient and kind when providing instructions.

·       Offer gentle reminders as needed.

·       Avoid derogatory language, bullying, or humiliation.

·       Allow breaks if interns show signs of anxiety or overwhelm, giving them time to regroup.

Structured support for a successful transition

MR.DIY’s newest store interns, together with representatives of MR.DIY Philippines and Marvelous Minds Tutorial Center celebrate the partnership of their institution with MR. DIY’s Store Internship for Neurodiverse Learners. The program equips the interns with work skills through hands-on customer service and visual merchandising tasks.

To ensure a smooth adjustment, the interns will initially work in two shifts and will be accompanied by a teacher from Candent Learning Haus and Marvelous Minds. Educators will provide guidance and conduct regular debriefing sessions with the interns to monitor their progress.

Looking ahead, MR.DIY, Candent, and Marvelous Minds plan to expand this initiative in 2025, with a vision to create more opportunities for neurodiverse individuals across MR.DIY’s store network nationwide.

MR.DIY’s leadership warmly welcomed the interns, affirming the company’s dedication to creating an inclusive future. MR.DIY’s Head of Legal shared: “We are committed to supporting you not just today, but every day. Everyone deserves an equitable opportunity, and each of you brings unique strengths—neurodiverse talents that enrich our team. We’re excited to be part of your journey and hope you enjoy this experience.”

The interns themselves are eager for the opportunity. Caleb looks forward to “being productive again,” excited to re-enter the workforce. Isaac is ready to “learn new things” and embrace the fresh challenges of retail. Stephen, enthusiastic about “helping customers and managing deliveries,” is keen to contribute hands-on. Red, meanwhile, is focused on “assisting customers with their purchases,” showing a strong interest in creating a positive shopping experience.

Parents of the interns have also expressed their gratitude. One parent remarked, “This experience allows my son to apply his practical skills meaningfully and helps him understand life beyond home and school.”

With the Store Internship for Neurodiverse Learners, MR.DIY is setting a new standard for inclusivity in the workplace, offering neurodiverse individuals the chance to gain valuable experience and contribute to a welcoming, supportive environment for employees and customers alike.
