Marcos hopes for lasting peace in Ukraine

President Marcos is hoping that there will finally be lasting peace in Ukraine as it marked 1,000 days since the war in the European country began.
In a social media post on Wednesday morning, Nov. 20, Marcos recalled his meeting with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in June where he reiterated the Philippines' support for Ukraine's sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity.
"It is our hope that we will see comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in Ukraine," he wrote on X.
"Ukraine is our valued partner, and our relations continue to go from strength to strength," he added.
During Zelenskyy's courtesy call to Marcos in Malacañan on June 3, the European leader thanked the Philippines for supporting Ukraine amid its ongoing war with Russia.
"Thank you so much for your big word and your position about us, about this Russian occupation of our territories," he said.
"Thank you for your support, your donations, your contributions," he added.
In November 2022, President Marcos described the war between the two European countries, which started with Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, as "unacceptable," and urged both parties to resolve the conflict diplomatically.
In a forum in Washington, D.C., last year, he raised the need to protect the sovereignty of each nation in the face of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
"I think we are in full agreement that we must continue to protect the sovereignty, not just sovereign rights, but the sovereignty of each nation, no matter where they are," Marcos had said.
"The situation in Ukraine cannot continue and it is something that is really anachronistic in the modern world," he added.
This year, both President Marcos and President Zelenskyy agreed to strengthen their 32-year-old bilateral relations, including exporting Ukrainian agricultural products to the Philippines. Zelenskyy added that Ukraine will open its embassy in Manila this year.

In 2022, Ukraine ranked as the 90th trading partner of the Philippines, the 119th export market and 76th import source. The total trade between the countries amounted to $16.9 million with exports valued at $1.49 million and imports at $15.41 million.
Ukraine served as a second home to nearly 200 Filipinos. But the figure went down to 25, who are mostly married to Ukrainians, due to the ongoing Ukraine-Russia crisis that started in February 2022.
Marcos also said the Philippines had been straightforward in supporting the resolutions passed by the United Nations (UN) in the war in Ukraine.
