The House of Representatives is ready to release funds that will serve as assistance to areas or congressional districts affected by typhoon “Pepito”.
Thus, said House Speaker Martin Romualdez on Sunday, Nov. 17 as Luzon braced for the potential devastating effects of the latest typhoon.
“Inaantay lang namin ang report ng aming mga miyembro at kung magkano ang pinasala sa kani-kanilang mga lugar para makapagpalabas ng pondo para sa mga biktima ng dumaang bagyo," Romualdez said.
(We're just waiting on the report of our fellow House members on the damage caused to their respective districts so that we can release funds for the typhoon victims.)
“Of course yung pondo na ibibigay natin ay para doon sa pagkukumpuni ng mga nasirang bahay at siyempre yung para sa pangkain ng mga pamilya dahil maaring nawalan sila ng hanapbuhay dahil sa bagyo,” explained the leader of the 300-plus strong House.
(Of course the funds that we will give are meant for the repairs of damaged homes and for the food budget of families that could lose their livelihood due to the storm.)
Members of Congress whose districts were affected by Pepito were expected to submit their requests for financial assistance Monday.
'Tabang Bikol, Tindog Oragon'
In a separate statement Sunday, Romualdez bared that a relief caravan comprising 24 truckloads of goods was set to leave for the Bicol region under the "Tabang Bikol, Tindog Oragon" relief initiative.
The program aims to support communities in Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, and Albay as they recover from the devastation caused by past typhoons "Kristine" and "Carina", as well as Pepito.
“This initiative is our way of showing that we stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our kababayans in Bicol during these challenging times,” said Romualdez, then main proponent of the program.
“Ang Tabang Bikol ay hindi lamang tulong pinansyal; ito’y simbolo ng malasakit at pagkakaisa ng sambayanang Pilipino,” the leader of the 300-plus strong House of Representatives added.
(Tabang Bikol isn't just about financial assistance; it symbolizes the compassion and unity of them Filipino nation.)
The relief effort includes three major activities: financial assistance payouts, a mini-Bagong Pilipinas Serbisyo Fair (BPSF) and the distribution of relief goods.
House Deputy Secretary General Sofonias “Ponyong” Gabonada, says the initiative is also being spearheaded by the House Appropriations Committee Chairman Zaldy Co, who also hails from Bicol. Gabonada says it embodies the House’s commitment to “holistic and sustainable recovery,” addressing both immediate and long-term needs.
He added that the distribution of financial aid under the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s (DSWD) Assistance for Individuals in Crisis Situations (AICS) program will begin on Nov. 18.
The mini-BPSF, scheduled for Nov. 21, will offer residents access to vital government services, including housing, healthcare and livelihood programs, according to Gabonada.
He said activities will take place at multiple venues: Jessie Robredo Coliseum in Naga City, Ka-Fuerte Sports Complex in Pili, and BUPC Gymnasium in Polangui, with 10,000 beneficiaries expected in each location.
A key feature of the initiative is the distribution of relief goods gathered from a nationwide donation drive, Romualdez said.
Dozens of truckloads carrying food, hygiene kits, clothing and other essentials will depart from the House of Representatives this Monday, Nov. 18, to bring aid to thousands of families.
The logistics effort reflects the commitment of the government and private donors to deliver tangible relief to affected areas, the Speaker said.
