7 dead in landslide in Nueva Vizcaya triggered by ‘Pepito’


AMBAGUIO, Nueva Vizcaya – Seven family members  were killed and three others, including a barangay “kagawad” or watchman, survived a landslide during the onslaught of super typhoon “Pepito” in Barangay Labang here on Sunday, Nov. 17.

The Police Regional Office-2 identified the victims as Angel Calanhi, 18; Maxcel Calanhi, 13; Janna Faith Calanhi, 8; Niko Tindaan, 14; Oscar Tindaan, 30; Jaymar Liwan, 12, and Balagan Calanhi, 16.

The victims were sleeping in the house of neighbor barangay kagawad Selo Calanhi when the landslide struck at 11 p.m.

Selo was covered with soil and sustained injuries along with Thelma and Mawi Shane Calanhi who were inside the house. 

Selo was reportedly assisting residents during a preemptive evacuation to the school and day-care center when the landslide struck. 

The MDRRMO conducted a search and retrieval operation and said that they are now providing the necessary assistance to the victims and survivors.

The road going to the area is impassable to all types of vehicles. There is no electricity and the area has poor communication signal.
