OFW Party-list Rep. Marissa "Del Mar" Magsino is prodding the Marcos administration to give "comparable opportunities" to returning overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who may be forced to leave their jobs in the United States (US) soon with the expected strict implementation of immigration laws.

This, as the lady solon told the Philippine government to proactively address the effects of the possible mass deportation of 300,000 undocumented Filipinos from the US under the incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump.

In a statement over the weekend, Magsino described the potential mass deportation of Filipinos as a "source of deep concern".

"While we acknowledge and respect the right of any sovereign nation to enforce its immigration policies, we cannot ignore the hardship that these deportations will bring to individuals and families who have established their lives and livelihoods in the US," she said.

"The potential uprooting of Filipinos from their homes, work, and communities poses significant challenges, both emotionally and economically," noted Magsino.

"In anticipation of this, we strongly urge the Philippine government to proactively address the effects of this possible mass deportation. It is essential that comprehensive social safety nets, reintegration programs, and mechanisms for job retooling, re-skilling, and employment facilitation be put in place," she said.

"These programs must ensure that the opportunities available to returning Filipinos are at least comparable to the jobs they may be forced to leave behind in the [US]," Magsino said.

She also called on the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) to take steps to ensure that due process is fully observed for Filipinos facing deportation.

She said these include access to hearings and the right to appeal, ensuring that their voices are heard and that they are given a fair opportunity to present their case.

"We strongly believe that the [US] is a nation that values fairness and justice, and that these principles will be upheld as they impose stricter immigration policies possibly leading to deportation process," Magsino said.

"Whether or not these fears materialize, the OFW Party-list stands in solidarity with our kababayans in the US as they navigate the uncertainty brought about by stricter immigration policies. We remain committed to advocating for their rights and well-being, both here and abroad," she said.
