PAGASA issues heavy rainfall, storm surge warnings due to ‘Pepito’


The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has issued a warning about heavy to intense, and possibly torrential, rainfall, along with life-threatening storm surges expected from Super Typhoon Pepito (international name: Man-yi) within the next 48 hours.

In its weather advisory issued at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16, PAGASA provided a heavy rainfall outlook due to “Pepito.”

From Saturday night (Nov. 16) to Sunday evening (Nov. 17), PAGASA said intense to torrential rainfall (greater than 200 mm) is expected in Catanduanes, Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte, Quezon, Aurora, Benguet, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino, Nueva Ecija, and Pangasinan.

Meanwhile, heavy to intense rains (100-200 mm) are also expected in La Union, Tarlac, Bulacan, Pampanga, Zambales, Rizal, Albay, Sorsogon, and Bataan.

Northern Samar, Masbate, Metro Manila, Cavite, Laguna, Marinduque, Batangas, Cagayan, Isabela, Ifugao, Mountain Province, Kalinga, Abra, and Ilocos Sur will also experience moderate to heavy rains (50-100 mm).

From Sunday evening (Nov. 17) to Monday evening (Nov. 18), PAGASA said heavy to intense rains (100-200 mm) will affect Benguet, Ifugao, Nueva Vizcaya, La Union, and Pangasinan, while moderate to heavy rains (50-100 mm) are expected in Zambales, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Ilocos Sur, Quirino, Nueva Ecija, and Tarlac.

“Forecast rainfall may be higher in mountainous and elevated areas,” PAGASA said. “Moreover, impacts in some areas may be worsened by significant antecedent rainfall,” it added.

In its 8 p.m. storm surge warning, PAGASA noted that “a high risk of storm surge may occur within the next 48 hours.”

PAGASA stressed that there is a “possibility of life-threatening inundation from rising sea water along with high waves in the low-lying coastal communities” in some municipalities in several provinces.

An estimated storm surge height of up to three meters is expected in La Union, Pangasinan, Aurora, Quezon, Albay, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Masbate, Sorsogon, and Northern Samar, Samar (Western Samar).

Storm surges with estimated heights of 2.1 to 3 meters may also occur in Ilocos Sur, La Union, Pangasinan, Isabela, Bataan, Zambales, Quezon, Batangas, Cavite, Marinduque, Albay, Camarines Sur, Masbate, Sorsogon, Eastern Samar, and Northern Samar, according to PAGASA.

Meanwhile, Ilocos Norte, Bataan, Bulacan, Pampanga, Metro Manila, and Sorsogon may also be affected by storm surges with estimated heights of one to two meters.

PAGASA advised residents living in low-lying coastal communities to stay away from the coast or beach and to cancel all marine activities.

The affected communities were also advised to move to higher ground, away from the coast and storm surge-prone areas.
