Baguio braces for super storm 'Pepito'

BAGUIO CITY – Mayor Benjamin Magalong has placed the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council on alert for super typhoon “Pepito.”

"The typhoon may hit us at night time, so we must be ready to respond to emergency calls with appropriate equipment such as spotlights and others," Magalong, CDRRMC head, said.

He urged the people here to prepare for Pepito which is expected to directly impact this city with heavy to intense rain from 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17, to 7 a.m. Monday, Nov. 18.

Magalong ordered them to avoid throwing garbage from Sunday to Monday to prevent them from being washed away and blocking drainage systems.

He has instructed barangay officials to conduct an inventory of disaster risk reduction and management tools and equipment.

"Barangays should immediately contact our CDRRM in case they lack appropriate equipment and supplies needed to respond to disasters."

The CDRRMC was ordered to keep communication lines open as the red alert code may be activated by Sunday night depending on Pepito’s track.

Magalong said the Smart City Command Center at the Baguio City Convention Center is on 24-hour duty to receive distress calls from the city's 911 emergency hotline.
