July 2 declared annually a special non-working holiday in Pasig

Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto announced on Friday, Nov. 15, that Congress has declared July 2 as a special non-working holiday in the city every year for the celebration of Araw ng Pasig, the city's founding anniversary.

The declaration was made under Republic Act 12062, authored by the city's representative, Roman Romulo, and was approved on Nov. 6.

This act, which originated in the House of Representatives, was passed by the House on September 5, 2022, and by the Senate on August 27 this year.

“Matic na 'special non-working holiday’ na ang July 2, Araw ng Pasig, tuwing taon. Hindi na tayo susulat taon-taon para makakuha ng Presidential Proclamation. Congratulations sa lahat ng Pasigueño! Di na tayo mag-aabang ng announcement tuwing June 30/July 1! (July 2, Araw ng Pasig, is now officially a special non-working holiday every year. We no longer need to write every year to obtain a Presidential Proclamation. Congratulations to all Pasigueños! We won't have to wait for an announcement every June 30 or July 1)," Sotto said.

According to former Director of the Institute of National Language, Dr. Jose Villa Panganiban, the name "Pasig" is said to be derived from an old Sanskrit word that means "a river flowing from one body of water to another."

The city was originally part of the Rizal Province until it was carved out of the province in 1975, when Metro Manila was formed. It was converted into a highly urbanized city following a plebiscite in 1995.
