Gilas Pilipinas might be in danger of not having two of its big men in its home stand in the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers.
Gilas team manager Richard del Rosario revealed that 6-foot-10 center AJ Edu is doubtful for the two games against New Zealand and Hong Kong while the 7-foot-3 Kai Sotto is still under concussion protocols and he still needs to get a clearance from the doctors to play
“AJ suffered an injury in his last game in Japan,” said Del Rosario during the Gilas press conference at the TV5 Media Center on Wednesday, Nov. 13.
“Right now we are in communication also with the medical team of AJ in the B-League and He needs to undergo strengthening with his knee. As you all know AJ has a long history of injuries,” he added.
Edu is still expected to arrive in the country and join the team in the team’s training camp at the Inspire Academy beginning Friday, Nov. 15.
“Once he arrives he's arriving today and then we will make our assessment with our trainers, our own trainers and medical staff and see from there it depends on his recovery if he will be available for the window,” explained Del Rosario.
On the other hand, there’s more optimism on the part of Sotto to suit up for the team as according to Del Rosari, he remains on track to be available come game time barring any setbacks in his completion of the concussion protocols.
“He's in the middle of the protocols. Right now there are six steps to be taken. He's on his third step. But it's not as easy as going to the next step right away,” said Del Rosario.
“So after one step, there's an observation period before you go to the next step in and the doctor has to see him and the doctor needs to clear him to play,” he added.
With the two questionable, reserves Japeth Aguilar and Mason Amos are waiting in the wings to be formally named into the Final 12.
