Marcos lauds PPA for port upgrades to boost cruise tourism

President Marcos has commended the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) for its ongoing efforts to modernize ports and expand cruise-dedicated facilities, reinforcing the Philippines' position as a premier cruise destination in Asia.

PPA General Manager Jay Daniel Santiago said these upgrades are crucial to meeting the growing demands of the cruise industry, with the development of cruise-dedicated ports being key to providing high-quality services for tourists.

“These initiatives are designed not only to attract more cruise calls but also to ensure that every ship that arrives in the Philippines contributes to the growth and well-being of local economies,” Santiago said.

Marcos noted that these improvements are aligned with the National Tourism Development Plan 2023-2028, which prioritizes enhancing port facilities and elevating the overall visitor experience.

The Philippines has earned recognition as a leader in cruise tourism, having been named Asia's Best Cruise Destination at the World Cruise Awards 2023 and Best Port of Call at the Asia Cruise Awards 2024.

More than 80,000 cruise passengers from leading international lines, including Norwegian Cruise Lines, Holland America Line, Silversea, Windstar Cruises, and AIDA, have visited the country, stimulating local economic growth.

The government anticipates the arrival of over 100,000 cruise passengers in 2024, further strengthening the tourism sector.

To support this vision, the PPA has improved key ports, including those in Currimao, Ilocos Norte; Salomague, Ilocos Sur; Manila; Bohol; and El Nido, Palawan.
