The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) said it is prepared to address potential power disruptions caused by Typhoon Nika and has mobilized its workforce to ensure prompt customer support.
In a statement, Meraclo said the utility firm is closely monitoring the typhoon's path as parts of its service area are now under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1.
Joe R. Zaldarriaga said, Meralco vice president and head of corporate communications, “Meralco’s crews and personnel are on standby 24/7, ready to respond to any possible electricity service concern as we continue to monitor the movements of the typhoon.”
Zaldarriaga also emphasized the importance of public safety by providing electrical safety guidelines, especially in areas experiencing flooding.
The company urged customers to turn off their main electrical power switch or circuit breaker and unplug appliances.
Meralco also advised against touching electrical facilities with wet hands and recommended removing mud and dirt from service equipment using protective gear.
Before turning on any flood-damaged appliances, residents should have their wiring system inspected by a licensed electrician.
Zaldarriaga added that keeping communication lines open and charging devices is crucial during severe weather events.
He noted the importance of staying informed by tuning in to public service radio stations for updates on power interruptions.
