The local governments of Marikina, Mandaluyong, Pasig, and San Juan announced the suspension of classes in private and public schools in their cities on Monday, November 11, due to the possible effects of Severe Tropical Storm Nika.
The cities cancelled classes at all levels, including asynchronous classes, as Signal No. 1 is raised in Metro Manila as of Sunday evening.
The Marikina government said that the order is also in accordance with Department of Education Order No. 37, s. 2022, or the guidelines for class suspension during natural disasters or calamities, classes are automatically suspended in public schools in areas where the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has raised Tropical Cyclone Warning Signals 1, 2, 3, or 4.
“Mahalaga ang kaligtasan at kapakanan ng ating mga mag-aaral. Isagawa natin ang ibayong pag-iingat (The safety and well-being of our students are important. Let us exercise utmost caution),” it said.
Meanwhile, the local government of Makati also explained the automatic suspension guidelines from DepEd, saying that face-to-face, online classes, and work from kindergarten to Grade 12 and the Alternative Learning System (ALS) are automatically cancelled in schools within local government units (LGUs) that are issued with TCWS by PAGASA.
“Pinaaalalahanan ang lahat na hindi na kailangan ng announcement ng cancellation ng klase mula sa LGU kapag itinaas na ng PAGASA ang typhoon signals (It is important to note that no further class cancellation announcement is needed from the LGU once PAGASA raises the typhoon signals),” it noted.
It also advised the public to stay updated through the PAGASA-National Capital Region PRSD Facebook page for further information on TCWS.
On the other hand, Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto reminded Pasigueños of Pasig EO 48, s. 2024.
“Which provides for automatic suspension for all levels for TCWS signal 1 and up, all levels for orange/red rainfall warnings, and suspension for K-12 under yellow rainfall warnings,” Sotto said.
He added that the School Division Office (SDO) and principals can declare suspensions for their schools.
