Body of fish vendor who drowned in Ilocos Sur recovered


VIGAN CITY, Ilocos Sur – The body of a fish vendor who drowned on the Abra River in Barangay San Mariano, Bantay, Ilocos Sur on Friday was recovered by rescuers on Sunday.

The victim, Mary Anne Daria, 47, drowned after the bamboo raft she was riding with her husband and son capsized due to strong river current caused by typhoon “Marce.” 

Daria’s son regained control of the raft and rescued his father but his mother went missing, said Rhon Arquelada, head of the Ilocos Sur Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office.

Meanwhile, a 21-year-old man drowned while swimming on a river in Barangay Mapuroc, San Mateo, Isabela on Sunday.

Police identified the victim as  Christian Columbino, a resident of Barangay San Roque, San Mateo.

Investigation said the victim was catching fish on the river with his nephew when he decided to swim at 10 a.m. However, he was carried away by the strong current and drowned. 

Rescuers recovered the victim’s body at 1 p.m.
