Meralco, Doosan explore nuclear energy options

The Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) has signed a deal with the South Korean firm Doosan Enerbility Co., Ltd. to develop low-carbon energy projects in the Philippines. 

In a statement, Meralco announced that it had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Doosan to collaborate and explore the potential deployment of nuclear facilities. 

These include the rehabilitation of the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP), research on small modular reactors (SMRs) for energy security, and the development of equipment for greenhouse gas reduction.

The equipment that was eyed for the partnership includes the ammonia co-firing technology for the country’s old thermal power plants.

Doosan would also be the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) for the gas turbine development and supply of combined cycle power projects of Meralco’s subsidiaries.

Yeonin Jung, Doosan vice chairman, assured the firm’s commitment to advancing energy innovation and sustainability in the Philippines.

“By working together on transformative projects, this collaboration will contribute to the modernization of the country’s energy infrastructure and help ensure a stable and long-term supply of clean, reliable power,” he said.

Manuel V. Pangilinan, Meralco chairman and chief executive officer, also believes that the partnership would “ensure availability of sufficient, affordable and reliable power to meet our country’s long-term goals.” 

Recently, President Ferdinand Marcos and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol signed a deal to conduct a feasibility study to potentially revive the BNPP.
