Senator Alan Peter Cayetano endorsed the candidacy of incumbent 1st District of Taguig-Pateros Rep. Ricardo “Ading” Cruz Jr., the rival of his brother and former mayor Lino Cayetano.
Lino Cayetano and Cruz both filed their certificates of candidacy (COC) for congressman of the 1st District of Taguig-Pateros for the May 12, 2025 national and local elections.
During the presentation of candidates in Taguig on Oct. 7, Mayor Lani Cayetano and her husband, Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, backed the candidacy of Cruz, who is seeking a second term as Taguig-Pateros congressman.

But according to Lino Cayetano, the senator’s decision was based on politics.
“Respetuhin natin ang politika ni Kuya Alan. Yan ang desisyon nya - pero naniniwala tayo na ang pamilya hindi dapat nagaaway, at ang serbisyo mas mahalaga kaysa sa politika (We should respect the politics of my brother Alan. That is his decision - but I believe that a family should not quarrel and service is more important than politics),” Lino Cayetano posted on Facebook on Oct. 7.
Cruz is running under the Nacionalista Party while Lino Cayetano filed his candidacy under the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC).
“Pinili na ng aking kapatid ang mga kakandidato sa 2025 sa Lungsod ng Taguig kasama nadin ang pag endorso sa kanyang kandidato para sa kinatawan ng Taguig at Pateros kaninang umaga. Ang distrito kung saan nagsimula ang aking Ama Rene Companero Cayetano (My brother [Alan Peter] chose the candidates in 2025 in the City of Taguig including endorsing his candidate for the representative of Taguig and Pateros this morning. The district where my father, Rene Companero Cayetano, started),” said Lino Cayetano, who is also a TV director.
Lino Cayetano served as mayor of Taguig from 2019 to 2022 but did not seek reelection and instead gave way to Lani Cayetano.
“Nagbigay daan tayo noon 2022 and itong 2025 at muli tayo ay magbibigay daan para kay ate Lani Lopez Cayetano bilang Mayor - suportado natin sha (We gave way in 2022 and this 2025 we will again be giving way for ‘ate’ Lani Lopez Cayetano as Mayor - let’s support her),” he added.
During Lino Cayetano’s term as mayor, Cruz served as his vice mayor.
Whether it’s Cruz or Lino Cayetano who bags the House seat in the election, it will be a win-win situation for Mayor Lani Cayetano if she gets a second term and her supporters. Cruz and Lino Cayetano are both supporting her.
“Maari tayong maglingkod sa ibang paraan. Ang importante - mabigyan ang Taguig at Pateros ng malakas na boses para makatulong sa ating mga kababayan, lalong lalo sa LGU ng Taguig at Pateros - pati sa mga barangay. Tayo din ang magiging tulay nila sa national government. Hindi pwede yung nangaaway, kailangan yung tutulay (We can serve in other ways. The important thing is to give a strong voice to Taguig and Pateros to help our countrymen, especially to the LGU of Taguig and Pateros, even to barangays. We will also be their bridge to the national government. To quarrel with someone should not be allowed, what is needed is someone who will be a bridge),” said Lino Cayetano.
He said, “Tayo ay naglingkod bilang kapitan, Congressman at Mayor ng Taguig kaya alam natin kung paano natin maipaglalaban at matutulungan si Mayor lani sa pagbigay solution sa ibat ibang mga problema natin (We served as barangay captain, Congressman and Mayor of Taguig so we know how to fight for and help Mayor Lani when it comes to providing solution to our different problems).”
If he wins, Lino Cayetano said he can work with the group of Mayor Lani Cayetano.
“Kilala ko lahat ng nasa grupong yan (I know all those who are in that team). We can all work together!”
Last Oct. 2, Lino Cayetano declared that he will run for congressman of the 1st District of Taguig-Pateros amid speculations that he would run for mayor against Mayor Lani Cayetano, his sister-in-law.
