A Filipino national who was convicted for murdering his business partner in Saudi Arabia has been executed, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) announced Tuesday, Oct. 8.
The Filipino national's execution came despite various appeals from the Philippine government, including through a letter from President Marcos to King Salman.
The Filipino was executed by hanging after the victim's family refused to meet the lawyers representing him as well as the blood money that was offered.
DFA Undersecretary Eduardo Jose de Vega did not provide much information about the Filipino national, but said he and the victim had a "business venture."
"They had a money dispute, and that led to the confrontation," de Vega said in a press briefing.
The killing happened in October 2020 and the sentence was made in March 2022.
The execution was originally set to happen in mid-2023 but it was postponed until this year.
De Vega said the Saudi government did not inform the Philippine government beforehand about the execution.
