Cagayan under state of calamity due to 'Julian' damages

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan – This province has been placed under a state of calamity due to the damage caused by super typhoon “Julian” last week.

Cagayan Provincial Board Member Vilmer Viloria said the provincial board approved the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council recommendation declaring a state of calamity on Monday.

Rueli Rapsing, officer-in-charge of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, said Cagayan sustained P793,683,218.21 in initial damage from Julian – P791,393,873.21 in agriculture, P2,186,145 in livestock, and P103,200 in infrastructure.

Rapsing said that the declaration would enable the provincial government to use P36 million from its quick response fund to assist residents affected by Julian.

The island-town of Calayan, Cagayan was earlier placed under a state of calamity after
Julian left more than P100 million in infrastructure damage and a still undetermined amount of damage in agriculture.
