LPA, ITCZ to bring rain showers across parts of the Philippines

Rain showers and thunderstorms may affect parts of the country due to a Low Pressure Area (LPA) and the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Monday, Oct. 7.

The LPA, embedded within the ITCZ, was located 165 kilometers west-northwest of Coron, Palawan, around 3 a.m.

PAGASA Weather Specialist Aldczar Aurelio said the LPA is not expected to develop into a tropical cyclone. However, along with the ITCZ, it may bring cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms to Bicol Region, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan, Quezon, Rizal, Laguna, and Batangas over the next 24 hours.

PAGASA warned of possible flash floods or landslides due to occasional heavy rains in these areas.

The ITCZ is an area where winds from the northern and southern hemispheres converge and where potential cyclones develop.

Meanwhile, PAGASA said warm winds from the Pacific Ocean, known as the easterlies, may bring partly cloudy to cloudy conditions with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms over Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Cagayan Valley, and Central Luzon.

Similar weather conditions may prevail over the rest of the country due to the ITCZ.

PAGASA also warned that flash floods or landslides may occur during severe thunderstorms.

Aurelio added that a tropical depression located 2,540 kilometers east of extreme northern Luzon is not expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility and may not directly affect the country’s weather conditions in the coming days.
