PAGASA says 'habagat' season is officially over

The Philippines is now in a gradual transition to the 'amihan' season

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) announced on Monday, Oct. 7 the official end of the southwest monsoon season, locally known as “habagat.”

Based on its recent analyses, PAGASA reported a significant weakening of the southwest monsoon over the past few days.

Moreover, it has observed the strengthening of the high-pressure system over East Asia, which gradually changed the weather patterns in the country. 

PAGASA said the country is now transitioning to the northeast monsoon season, locally called “amihan,” which may be formally declared in the coming weeks.

The prevalence of the northeasterly wind flow, easterlies, and the intertropical convergence zone, along with the more frequent thunderstorms, are signs that the country is transitioning to the amihan season.
