PH reiterates call for recognition of Palestinian state

The Philippines has reiterated its support for the creation of the state of Palestine amid a looming number of Palestinian people being displaced due to Israel's continued bombardment on Gaza.

Philippine Permanent Mission to the United Nations (UN) Minister Noel Novicio relayed Manila's backing for a Two-State Solution during a recent open debate at the UN Security Council.

The country's support for the creation of the Palestinian state, which was first expressed in May, was consistent when it joined a global alliance pushing for a two-state solution that was formed by Saudi Arabia.

"In May, the Philippines supported a General Assembly resolution that upgrade the Palestine's rights at the United Nations as an observer state and urged the Security Council to favorably consider Palestine's full membership," Novicio said.

"In this regard, the Philippines supports the creation of the State of Palestine and its acceptance as a full member of the United Nations as soon as possible," he added.

Novicio also stressed that diplomacy is key to the lasting peace in the Middle East.

On Oct. 29, UN members gathered for an open debate at the Security Council as the Israel-Hamas war continues a year after it started.

Many countries believed that a recognition of Palestine as a state would resolve the years-long conflict between the two sides.

During the debate, Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Tor Wennesland urged UN members to exert more efforts to de-escalate tension as he said "we areâ€¦at the most dangerous juncture in the Middle East in decades."

He also observed an immense destruction of residential buildings, roads, hospitals and schools in Gaza, and thousands of people are now living in makeshift tents, with nowhere else to go as winter nears.
