Boosting Math skills: DepEd partners with Japanese firm to enhance learners' proficiency in public schools

The Department of Education (DepEd) announced on Thursday, Oct. 31, a partnership with a Japanese firm in a significant move to boost math proficiency among public school students.

“Strengthening our students’ math skills is essential,” DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara said during the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signing ceremony held at the Bulwagan ng Karunungan in DepEd.

DepEd has formalized its partnership with the Japan-based Sprix, Inc. to provide learners nationwide with free access to the Test of Fundamental Skills (TOFAS).

“This partnership aims to support thousands of students in mastering essential math skills critical for their academic success,” DepEd said.

During the signing, Angara was joined by Sprix Ltd. President and Representative Director Hiroyuki Tsuneishi, Sprix Ltd. Global Strategy Division Lead Development Officer Leo Shoji, and Sprix Co. Ltd. – Philippines Chief Representative Algrace Avancena.

Empowering students

“With TOFAS, we have a targeted tool that identifies math proficiencies and areas for growth, and we are confident this will empower students across the country,” Angara explained.

“Initial feedback from our regional directors has been overwhelmingly positive, and we’re eager to expand its use to more learners,” he added.

TOFAS enables teachers to accurately assess students' calculation and problem-solving skills, offering valuable data to customize instruction based on each student's individual needs.

By identifying strengths and areas for improvement, TOFAS also enhances communication among teachers, students, and parents, building a supportive system that promotes motivation and academic growth.

In addition to academic benefits, TOFAS supports student well-being by providing teachers and parents with clear insights into each learner’s progress in mathematics, fostering greater engagement in both math and programming.

"We’re thrilled to see TOFAS support students in the Philippines,” Tsuneishi said. “Our goal is to equip teachers with insights to better address the learning needs of every student,” he added.

DepEd said that this initiative demonstrates its commitment to improving education quality throughout the Philippines, in line with President Marcos' vision of providing equal opportunities and resources for all Filipino learners.
