High-flying Francis Lopez said the Fighting Maroons should not be complacent as they aim to finish the first round with a clean record.
“Still a lot to improve on [and] it's just the first round, 6-0. But at the same time, we've got to give credit to the coaches and us as well for working hard for this one,” said Lopez, who finished with 15 points, six rebounds, two assists, two steals and two block in UP’s 81-70 win over UST Wednesday, Oct. 2, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
“Every team is a tough team for us. We can't be complacent about any team. So we're just really happy that we got this one,” he added.
For Harold Alarcon, who contributed 16 points, winning the championship stays as the main goal.
“Patapos palang ang first round, hindi naman first round lang ang goal namin, ‘yong goal is not just the second round,” said Alarcon.
‘Yong goal talaga namin is ‘yong makuha ‘yong UAAP Championship,” he added.
Despite competing without JD Cagulangan who felt under the weather, the Katipunan-based team managed to buck a slow start and lean on a strong fourth quarter assault to beat the Growling Tigers (3-3)
The State U wishes to fix the issues and hope not to repeat the same mistakes when it faces reigning champion De La salle on Sunday, Oct. 6, at the Mall of Asia Arena.
