Hope springs eternal for Converge

Those were the words Converge held on to in Game 3 and those will remain as the team's battlecry heading into another do-or-die showdown on Friday, Oct. 4.

"We want to hold onto two (words). First is hope. We're down on one two but we're not yet out. So, there's still hope," said head coach Franco Atienza ahead of the 7:30 p.m. collision.

"And the second word I want to put there is grit. When you put hope and grit together, you give yourself a chance to win the game," he added.

The renewed confidence for Converge stemmed from their pulsating 114-112 Game 3 win with those two qualities evidently shown by the FiberXers.

Trailing by as many as 27 points in the second half, Converge pumped life to its flickering hopes behind a huge fourth quarter outburst.

Converge put itself in the position to win in the waning minutes before fully claiming the victory at the last second when Alec Stockton drained a buzzer-beating jumper over the outstretched arms of CJ Perez.

Against a mighty Beermen team, Atienza said the FiberXers need to keep the game close again and then grind it out in the end game.

"We want to put it in a toss coin, parang 50/50 chance. We might win it, we might lose it, but give us a chance na either we win it by playing defense or we win it by shooting the basket," said Atienza.

"We want to get there. We know that's tough and maybe that's the closest we can go against teams like San Miguel – yung toss coin chance, at the end of the game, one play left in the game, 50/50," he added.

It might be the best chance for Converge to pull off another upset against SMB which is showing signs of vulnerability after also dropping its opening game against Suwon KT in the East Asia Super League two nights ago.

"It's a testament of hope and grit. Hopefully, we will grind out another one and then let's see. Take it from there," said Atienza.
