After a year of modernizing electric power distribution in Iloilo City, MORE Electric and Power Corporation (MORE Power) has commenced the connection of its Underground Distribution System (UDS).

In a statement, MORE Power announced the successful connection of its first recipient on JM Basa Street and reported that a series of checks and tests have been conducted to ensure a safe, efficient, and reliable system.

The UDS enables electricity to flow without the need for overhead or unsightly power lines.

The distribution utility shared that it employed horizontal directional drilling (HDD), a technique for installing underground utilities and plumbing without requiring open trenches. 

This approach minimizes disruptions in the downtown area, with construction scheduled only during off-peak hours to reduce traffic congestion.

Valued at P96 million, this project was launched in mid-2023 to relocate overhead electrical lines across a 1-kilometer stretch of Iloilo City’s historic business district, including Calle Real, the heritage zone.

The route extends from the corner of Arroyo Street to Aldeguer Street, Guanco Street, Mapa Street, Ortiz Street, and Rizal/Zamora Street (Burgos Street), culminating at Plaza Libertad.

Roel Z. Castro, MORE Power president and chief executive officer, stated that this project marks a historic milestone for Iloilo City and will continue to provide energy to more consumers in the area.

“Investing in underground infrastructure is a testament to our commitment to innovation and sustainability. As we move forward, we will keep our customers informed and involved in the process, ensuring that our initiatives align with the community’s needs and aspirations,” he said.

Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas commended MORE Power for pioneering underground cabling in the Visayas, which modernizes and beautifies Calle Real.

“This pioneering project, led by MORE Electric and Power Corporation (MORE Power) in collaboration with telcos and cable TV providers, is gradually transforming Iloilo City’s visual landscape. By moving overhead wires underground, we aim to eliminate the unsightly 'spaghetti' of tangled wires, particularly in areas like Calle Real and our heritage plazas,” he stated.

“This effort goes beyond aesthetics; it reflects our goal of delivering improved, reliable, and efficient utility services to every Ilonggo family,” Treñas added.
