Mindanao solon says justice must be served after Duterte's admission of responsibility in drug war

A ranking congressman from Mindanao--the supposed bailiwick of Rodrigo Duterte--has said that justice must be served in connection with the former president's admission of responsibility in the thousands of deaths during the latter's war on drugs.

Lanao del Norte 1st Rep. Khalid Dimaporo has said that the country is governed by laws and not of men who wield enormous influence, which simply means no one is above the law, regardless of their stature in society.

“This admission [from Duterte] should galvanize us to reinforce our commitment to justice and human rights. We owe it to the victims and to the Filipino people to prove that our institutions can and will deliver justice,” Dimaporo, chairman of the House Committee on Muslim Affairs, said in a statement.

On Monday, Duterte served as the high-profile resource person declared during the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee's inquiry on the previous administration’s bloody anti-narcotics campaign.

The ex-chief executive repeatedly said during the Senate hearing that he would take full legal responsibility for the drug war.

Dimaporo reckoned that government should have “a united stand on human rights".

Duterte was a multi-term mayor of Davao City before his history climb to the Palace seat in 2016.

In the Blue Ribbon panel hearing, Duterte even wondered what was taking the Department of Justice (DOJ) so long to file charges against him.
